Barnes Kitchen

Designed and fabricated in my London Studio, this kitchen was designed to tie together the new extension with the existing architecture, playing with a range of materials and textures along the way. The kitchen is the final piece of a complete refurbishment of the building.

The patinated handles and brass were fabricated in the studio along with the casting of the concrete, which was cast in vertical moulds and polished. The careful selection of the Birch Masur veneer, which was widely used in Art Deco furniture, and cherry hardwood help to soften the feel of the kitchen.

The brass for the handles was water jet cut to size, then bent using a sheet metal folder, patinated and polished, creating an individual pattern and texture on each one. The same process was used for the large brass panels on the island.

I have included some images of the casting process involved in the making of the concrete pieces in the kitchen. The moulds are made in plywood, varnished and sealed with silicone. Suspended in the moulds are stainless steel rebar to help with the structure of the large Island ends.
